ABOUT

The No Excuses Mentoring Program (N.E.M.P.) was founded by Orlando Norwood in 2016, and in May 2020 became a 501(C)3 organization. Since its inception, there have been 190 members ranging from 9th grade -12th grade. As the 2021-2022 school year began, we have 15 members ranging from the 10th-12th grade.

These at-risk youth were selected because of academic concerns, behavior issues, or the lack of parental support. Our program meets on Saturday’s to focus on social/emotional skills, scholarship, leadership, and community service for all mankind. Our academic goal for each student is an unweighted grade point average of a 3.0 or higher every marking period. In order to reinforce this academic goal, progress reports, attendance, and behavior goal setting sheets are reviewed and completed by each student biweekly.

During our weekly meetings, we have enrichment activities through writing or discussions focusing on character building and debunking negative stereotypes concerning at-risk youth. In addition, previous graduates from Orange County Public School’s speak to our students to share their life stories regularly. This segment is extremely beneficial because it motivates and inspires our members to keep working hard to reach their individual goals. Furthermore, we discuss community service ideas to implement on a biweekly basis. Previously, N.E.M.P. has volunteered at Winegard Elementary’s Field Day Events, the South Orlando Y.M.C.A. Head Start Center, and mentored at-risk male students at Westridge Middle School. Currently, we serve as volunteers for the Special Olympics, mentor at-risk male students at Walker Middle School/Palmetto Elementary School, and participate in bingo activities at the local nursing home.
